Tuolumne Me-Wuk Indian Health Center Hosts 3rd Annual Women’s Wellness Event
Celebrating Community, Empowerment, and the Power of Early Detection
The Tuolumne Me-Wuk Indian Health Center invites the community to its 3rd Annual Women’s Wellness Event, taking place on Saturday, October 18, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Tuolumne Clinic.
This intimate, community-centered gathering is designed to uplift, connect, and empower women of all ages. Guests can look forward to:
• Community resource booths offering engaging health and wellness information
• Raffle prizes and fun giveaways
• A self-defense product booth promoting safety and confidence
• An array of women-owned artisan and craft vendors showcasing unique goods
• Live acoustic music by Debora Olguin
• Delicious food available for purchase from Taqueria El Capitan Food Trailer
At the heart of this year’s event is a vital message: raising awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 316,950 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2025, along with 59,080 non-invasive cases. Sadly, 42,170 women and 510 men are projected to lose their lives to the disease this year.
Here in California, the state bears the highest number of new breast cancer cases and deaths—but thanks to strong prevention and treatment programs, California has one of the lowest mortality rates, estimated at 19 deaths per 100,000 women (Susan G. Komen Foundation).
The numbers highlight the life-saving power of early detection:
• When caught early and still localized, breast cancer has a 99% five-year survival rate.
• The overall survival rate across all stages is 91%, dropping significantly when the cancer spreads regionally (86%) or distantly (32%).
• Alarmingly, diagnoses among women under 50 are on the rise, increasing by 1.4% annually between 2012 and 2021.
“This event is one of many initiatives Tuolumne Me-Wuk Indian Health Center’s Outreach Program has rolled out for 2025,” said Dee Baldwin, Director for Tribal Health Outreach. “Our goal is to forge strong partnerships with our tribal community, connect patients with community resources, and broaden healthcare access throughout our entire community.”
The Women’s Wellness Event is free to attend, and all are welcome to join in a day of connection, education, and celebration of women’s health.
